Room In The Inn
'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty
and give you drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and
clothe you?
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'
And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you,
whatever you did for one of
these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Fr. Charles Strobel started Room In The Inn (RITI) in Nashville
in 1986 after seeing the need first-hand at his downtown parish.
On a cold, harsh Saturday evening he saw several people sleeping
in their cars in his parking lot and invited them into his church
to spend the evening. That night he decided that he needed to
get involved, to make a difference. Fr. Strobel says, "Room
In The Inn is a ministry that enables more people to understand
the problems of the homeless by getting directly involved with
people who are homeless." Fr. Strobel and his staff keep
a close and caring eye on the men in the program. They put them
through an extensive orientation program and they set high expectations
on behavior. They look to area churches to open up their facilities
to them to provide housing, food and fellowship. Most churches
participate in the program by housing a set number of guests
once a week during the months of November through March.
Holy
Family participates in the ministry on Saturday nights. Our
typical night starts with picking our guests up downtown around
6:30 p.m. and bringing them back to our church to spend the
night. We serve a wonderful dinner, provide breakfast and send
them off with a sack lunch. They leave the church by 6:00 a.m.
on Sunday morning when we start cleaning up. If you think this
might be a ministry you would like to get involved with, we
have a place for you to serve. This is an active ministry that
requires not only a piece of your time, but more importantly,
a piece of your heart. It takes fifteen to twenty people to
put one night on, so as the Lord said, "The harvest is
plentiful but the laborers are few." We need people to
cook the meals, pick up and deliver the guests, serve the meals,
stay the night and help clean up in the morning. While none
of it is hard, all of it is rewarding. Please contact the Parish
Office at 373-0704 for more information.
