"Grace Notes" Music Ministry

Adult, Youth and Children's Choirs

Cathy Mayo-Bell

Director of Music Ministries

St. Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians.  We invoke the prayers of St. Cecilia in order to ask God’s blessings on musicians and the hymns they proclaim to Him.  She has become a symbol of the Church’s conviction that good music is an integral part of our liturgy,  of greater value to the Church than any other art.

“These are the pastoral musicians, whose ministry is especially cherished by the Church.” (Liturgical Music Today, §63)

The Call:  All are called to serve the Church and everyone has gifts to be used for the good of the community.  Your call comes from God, who gave you your musical gifts, and this call is affirmed by our faith community.  Give your gift selflessly.

The Task:  The task of ministry is to serve others.  Music in the liturgy is not an end in itself.  Music ministers are called to lead, support, and enrich the assembly’s sung prayer, and to bring to the liturgy a means of expression that cannot be achieved in any other way.

The Presence:  Ministry involves presence as well as task.  You are more than a voice or an instrument.  Levels of skill may differ, but all are truly equal in this ministry, as a way of living out the gospel.

The Cost:  To serve in music ministry requires a sacrifice of both time and talent.  The sacrifice of time involves rehearsals, personal preparation, and arriving early for liturgies.  Some may be required to sacrifice the use of talent ~ putting your gifts to use in the worshiping community rather than in the local choral society.  Our whole community is enriched by those who sing God’s praises and cooperate in God’s works of conversion among us.

The Expectations:  Music ministry involves commitments to both rehearsals and liturgies.  Expect to work hard at rehearsals.  Be reliable.

“Thus, the pastoral musician is not merely an employee or volunteer.  The pastoral musician is a minister, someone who shares faith, serves the community, and expresses the love of God and neighbor through music.” (LMT, §64)

Grace Notes Music Ministry exists to enhance the liturgical celebrations of the Parish by supporting the participation of the assembly.  All weekend Masses, Holy Day liturgies, special events, Funeral liturgies, Nuptial Masses and Wedding ceremonies are musically supported by an accompanist, a cantor, various supplementary instruments and by the participation of one or all of the choirs.

The Adult Choir is an accomplished SATB ensemble which sings at the 11:00 am Mass each Sunday, at Holy Day liturgies, and, by request, at any other events on or off campus. Membership is open to anyone 18 and older.  Some choral music experience is preferred.

Cantors are drawn from among qualified, active Grace Notes Adult Music Ministry members.

The Children’s Choir is open to anyone, ages 3-9.  The Youth Choir is open to anyone, ages 9-17. The Children’s and Youth Choirs are active during the school year and support the participation of the assembly at one Mass each month, Breakfast With Santa, Christmas Eve Pageant and Mass, Easter season production, and at miscellaneous performances off Holy Family campus, as requested.
